Harvesting Compost
Both me and my wife have been into gardening, lately. Over the years, we have built up a few pallet boxes where we grow vegetables. This lead us into health and biology of soil, which again lead us into the adventures of compost.
Our garden is at our cabin (we live in an apartment in the city), but we spend most weekends there. And the cabin is on top of a small hill, which makes the soil depth minimal. With soil from the garden center, we might not end up with the best soil quality. And this is were the compost comes into the picture; to improve our soil and micro biology there.
We collect what we have in the garden, but also add kitchen waste, and not to mention huge amounts of usedb coffee grounds from my workplace. Up to 20 liters of coffee grounds a week creates a lot of compost, but we mix it with milled branches from our compost grinder. When the compost is ready, not all of the wood is broken down, and that needs to be sieved out.

The wood pieces is kept, and will be reused for next year’s compost.
I also cut the used bog rolls (yes, we have a outhouse at the cabin) and put it in the compost. Today I hang up the brand new scissors from IKEA in the outhouse, making the bog roll cutting easier.

We have two compost bins, and the one I didn’t empty today is almost full now. At least half of the content is coffee. We had 40 degress celsius there today, so it is working its way for next year’s compost.
